I’ve been getting out and about lately and getting to know other professionals in the birth and newborn world here in Indianapolis. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Indianapolis doula Cara Mehlon. She shared with me a bit about herself and her work as a doula.
Cara Mehlon Birth and Wellness focuses on preparing mothers and families for the journey of a new baby. I offer Massage Therapy, Natural Childbirth Education and Birth Doula Services. As a mother and Breastfeeding USA Counselor, I am also able to support new mothers who may need guidance while breastfeeding their babies. I’m located in Carmel, IN and often teach classes privately in clients’ homes as well as in the office of Cooper Family and Pediatric Chiropractic in Carmel.
My love for birth and babies began when I was in massage therapy school more than 13 years ago. I had a friend who was in labor and I had recently been studying acupressure points to help labor along. While using these specific points I was able to help relax my client with general massage techniques, mainly on the hands and feet. The results were obvious and it felt so rewarding to be able to help my friend using something so comforting to her. I love teaching these prenatal massage techniques to my students and their partners – Mom always loves a good foot massage right?
When my husband and I were planning to have children of our own I wanted to learn everything about birth – this is when I took my Doula Training. I chose to have a doula at both of my baby’s births and was so glad that I did. She prepared me before the birth and was there for me every step during labor and to help guide me along my breastfeeding journey. As a Childbirth Educator I enjoy teaching my students all the joys of pregnancy and birth. I don’t like to sugar coat things though, it’s not always a piece of cake, but being prepared and informed is so helpful for such an incredible life event.
I believe I have always been a “nurturer.” I am the oldest of five and enjoyed taking care of my younger siblings so once I found this type of work I knew I was made for helping families.
I have so many favorite things about my job. As a massage therapist, I always get a joyful and relaxed smile from my client before they go. I am able to talk them through some of their more difficult times or let them drift off to relaxation to wake up to a healthier and happier body. I have always enjoyed making people feel better.
As a Childbirth Educator, I love teaching couples all about how to really enjoy their birthing experience as mucdh as they can and help them look forward to the birth of their precious baby. Preparing these families is an absolute joy. As a doula – ok, maybe this is my favorite part – I get to see babies be born! I help Mom and her birth partner through this amazing day of joy and strength. Then I end the word day with a beautiful, nursing baby cuddled up with Mom or Dad. I always leave with a heart full of love and thankful that they chose ME to be a part of their special day.
With all of these specialties there are always surprises. It’s never a dull moment in the baby business!
