Why Fall Is the Best Time for Family Portraits in Carmel
October in Hamilton County is something special. The woods turn gold and rust and deep red, the light gets that warm late-afternoon quality that photographers dream about, and families who planned ahead get the most beautiful portraits of their year. If you have been thinking about fall family portraits in Carmel, Westfield, or Zionsville, this guide covers everything you need to know — from timing and pricing to what to wear and how to make sure you actually get the date you want.
I have been photographing families across Hamilton County for nearly 25 years, and fall is consistently my most requested season. The colors, the light, and the general feeling of October in Indiana make for portraits that look completely different from anything you can get in spring or summer. Furthermore, families who book early consistently walk away with images they love because they had the flexibility to choose the right date, the right time of day, and the right location for their family.

When Should You Schedule Fall Family Portraits?
October is the sweet spot. That is when Indiana’s wooded areas hit peak color and the light has that warm, golden quality that makes fall portraits so distinctive. Early October tends to be slightly earlier on color but gives you more scheduling flexibility. Mid to late October is when color peaks but availability gets tight fast.
My honest advice is to reach out in August or early September at the latest. By the time most families start thinking about fall portraits, the best October dates are already gone. Additionally, booking early gives us time to plan your outfits, talk through your vision, and make sure everything is set well before your session day. But even if you missed that timeframe, call the studio. I will do my best to squeeze you in.
September sessions are also an option for families who want the feel of fall without waiting for peak color. The light in September is beautiful, the temperatures are comfortable, and you will have far more date options to choose from. Similarly, early November can work depending on the year, though leaf drop is less predictable and you may end up with bare branches rather than color.
Mini Sessions vs. Full Sessions — Which Is Right for Your Family?
I offer both mini sessions and full portrait sessions for fall family photos. The right choice depends on what your family needs and how you plan to use the images.
Fall Family Mini Sessions
Mini sessions run approximately 20-30 minutes and are a great fit for families who know what they want and just need a focused, efficient experience. They work especially well for families with young kids who do not love long sessions, and for families who primarily want images for holiday cards or a single wall portrait. Furthermore, the shorter format keeps energy levels high, which tends to show up in the expressions.
Full Fall Family Sessions
Full sessions run 45 to 60 minutes and give us more time to move through different spots, try different groupings, and let the session breathe a little. If you want a larger gallery with more variety — different poses, different groupings of family members, more options to choose from — a full session is the better fit. Additionally, full sessions work well for larger families or families with multiple kids where you need a little extra time to get everyone organized and relaxed.
What Is Included and What Does It Cost?
Mini sessions are $399 and include your portrait session plus 10 professionally edited digital images delivered through an online gallery. Full sessions are $549 and include a 45- to 60-minute session plus 24 professionally edited digital images with reprint rights.
All images are delivered through an online gallery where you can download, share, and order prints directly. The editing process covers color, exposure, and anything distracting in the background. What you receive are finished portraits that are ready to use however you like.

Where Are Fall Family Sessions Held?
Most of my fall family sessions take place in wooded outdoor locations around Carmel. The natural tree canopy in Hamilton County produces a color backdrop in October that is genuinely hard to beat. I choose locations based on where the light is best at your session time, what the color looks like that particular week, and what will work best for your family’s size and energy.
Outdoor Sessions
Outdoor sessions in wooded settings are my most popular option for fall portraits and for good reason. The combination of fall color, natural light filtering through the trees, and the organic textures of a wooded setting creates portraits with a warmth and depth that studio or urban settings simply cannot replicate. Moreover, kids tend to be more relaxed and natural outdoors, which shows up immediately in the images.
In-Studio Sessions
For families who prefer an indoor environment, studio sessions are available at my Noblesville studio. Studio sessions have a clean, classic look and are a good option when weather is a concern or when you simply prefer a controlled environment. In-studio fall sessions focus entirely on your family rather than the seasonal backdrop.
In-Home Sessions
In-home sessions are available for an additional fee. If your home has great light and you love the idea of portraits in your own space, this can be a beautiful and personal option. Reach out for pricing on in-home sessions.
What Should We Wear for Fall Family Portraits?
Outfit coordination is one of the biggest factors in how your portraits turn out, and it is also one of the things families stress about most. Here is how I think about it after nearly 25 years of fall sessions.
Earth tones work beautifully in wooded fall settings. Rust, olive, cream, warm tan, burgundy, and deep forest green all photograph well against fall color and complement rather than compete with the natural backdrop. Navy and camel are also strong choices. Additionally, rich jewel tones like emerald and deep plum can look gorgeous in fall light.
Coordinate without matching exactly. When everyone wears something from the same color family, the images look pulled together without feeling stiff or overly staged. Layers add texture and dimension to outdoor images — think chunky knit sweaters, denim jackets, scarves, and cozy vests. These elements give your portraits a seasonal warmth that flat, smooth fabrics often lack.
Avoid large logos, busy graphics, and neons. These pull attention away from faces and date quickly. Solid colors and subtle textures almost always outperform prints in a wooded outdoor setting. Furthermore, make sure shoes match the overall feel of your outfits and are appropriate for walking on uneven ground. Footwear shows up in full-length shots more than most families expect.
If you are not sure about your outfit choices, send me photos before your session. I am happy to give honest feedback on what will photograph well for your specific family, coloring, and location.

The Biggest Mistakes Families Make With Fall Portraits
After 25 years of fall sessions, I have seen the same two mistakes come up over and over. Both are completely avoidable with a little planning.
Waiting Too Long to Book
This is by far the most common issue. Families start thinking about fall portraits in late September or early October and reach out to find that the best dates are already gone. October in Hamilton County is in high demand. Therefore, if you want a specific date or time of day, reaching out in August is not too early. It is actually just about right.
Not Coordinating Outfits in Advance
The second most common issue is showing up on session day with outfits that clash, compete with the backdrop, or simply do not work together as a group. This is one hundred percent avoidable. Send me photos of your outfit options before your session and I will tell you honestly what will work and what will not. A little planning on this front makes a significant difference in the final images.
How Does Scheduling Work?
Unlike one-day mini session events, my fall family sessions are scheduled individually around your family’s calendar. You pick a date and time that works for you. This flexibility is one of the things my clients appreciate most, especially during a season that is already packed with school events, sports, and weekend commitments.
Golden hour sessions — late afternoon in the hour or two before sunset — tend to produce the most beautiful fall light. If you have flexibility on timing, I always recommend an afternoon session over a morning one for fall portraits. The light is warmer, the shadows are longer, and the overall quality of the images tends to be noticeably better.
To get started, reach out through my contact page and we will find a date that works. The earlier you reach out, the more options you will have.
