A Transparent Guide to Newborn Photography Pricing
One of the first questions expecting parents ask when planning a newborn photography session in Indianapolis is simple: how much does it cost? After nearly 25 years of photographing newborns throughout Carmel and the Indianapolis area, I understand why pricing feels confusing. There’s a wide range out there, and it can be hard to know what you’re actually paying for. This guide breaks it all down so you can make a confident, informed decision for your family.

What Affects the Cost of Newborn Photography in Indianapolis
Newborn photography pricing isn’t random. Several specific factors determine what a photographer charges, and understanding them helps you compare options fairly.
Experience and Specialization
Experience is the single biggest driver of price in newborn photography. Newborns are genuinely difficult to photograph. They can’t follow directions, they have their own schedule, and working with them safely and beautifully requires a very specific skill set. That skill set takes years to develop. A photographer who has completed hundreds of newborn photoshoots over decades brings something to your session that a newer photographer simply can’t replicate yet. As a result, more experienced photographers typically charge more, and for good reason.
Additionally, specialization matters. A photographer who focuses specifically on newborn photography has invested in the right studio equipment, props, wraps, and backdrops for this kind of work. That investment is reflected in the final images. If you want to understand more about what makes a newborn photographer truly qualified, my post on how to choose the best newborn photographer covers exactly what to look for before you book anyone.
Studio vs. In-Home Photography Sessions
Studio photography sessions typically cost more than in-home sessions. A professional studio is a controlled environment with consistent lighting, a full range of props and backdrops, and a space that stays warm enough for a newborn to be comfortable throughout the photoshoot. In-home lifestyle sessions have their own charm, but they rely heavily on the conditions in your home, which vary significantly from family to family.
My studio in Carmel is fully equipped for posed newborn photography. Everything your baby needs is already here. You don’t need to bring a single thing except your baby and your family.
Number of Images and What’s Included
The number of fully edited digital images included in a package is a major factor in pricing. More images means more photoshoot time, more editing time, and more value delivered. Beyond the images themselves, look carefully at what else is included. Full reprint rights, private online galleries, props, and outfit options all add real value to a package and should be factored into any comparison.

Watch Me Grow Collections — Document Every Milestone
For families who want to document the entire first year of their baby’s life, the Watch Me Grow Collections are the most comprehensive option I offer. Both collections cover every major milestone from pregnancy through your baby’s first birthday and save $200 compared to booking each photography session individually.
Watch Me Grow Full Collection — $1,996 (Save $200)
The complete first-year experience. Includes a maternity photoshoot, newborn photoshoot, baby milestone photoshoot, and cake smash photoshoot. Additionally, four 11×14 portraits are included, one from each photoshoot in the collection.
Watch Me Grow Mini Collection — $1,396 (Save $200)
The same milestone coverage in mini format. Includes a mini maternity photoshoot, mini newborn photoshoot, mini baby milestone photoshoot, and mini cake smash photoshoot. Similarly, four 11×14 portraits are included, one from each photoshoot.
These collections are particularly popular with first-time parents who want a complete record of that remarkable first year. In fact, many families tell me the Watch Me Grow Collection is one of the best decisions they made as new parents.
Why Cheaper Isn’t Always Better for Newborn Photography
It’s tempting to compare photographers on price alone. Understandably, new parents are managing a lot of expenses at once. However, newborn photography is one area where cutting corners can genuinely cost you more in the end, and not just financially.
Newborns require a photographer with real, deep experience. Working safely with a newborn, keeping them comfortable, and capturing genuinely beautiful portraits takes hundreds of photoshoots to learn well. A photographer charging significantly less than their peers in the area is often reflecting their experience level in their pricing. That’s not a criticism — everyone starts somewhere. But your newborn’s first two weeks are a window that closes permanently, and those portraits can’t be retaken.
Beyond experience, consider what’s actually included. A lower price sometimes reflects fewer images, no reprint rights, no props, or significant additional charges for things that should be standard. Read every package carefully before you compare prices. The true cost of a photography session is always the total value delivered, not the number at the top of the page.
Choosing well means asking the right questions before you book. My post on what to look for in a newborn photographer gives you a complete framework for making that decision confidently.
Your Newborn Photography Pricing Questions Answered
Is newborn photography worth the cost?
Yes, genuinely. Those first few weeks go by faster than any parent expects. The portraits from a professional newborn photoshoot become some of the most treasured images a family owns. Many of my clients tell me years later that their newborn portraits are among their most prized possessions. The investment is real, but so is the return.
What is included in the price of a newborn photography session?
At L. Severson Portraits, every package includes fully edited digital images, full reprint rights, a private online gallery, and all props and wraps. There are no hidden fees and no surprise charges after your photoshoot.
Do I need to bring anything to the newborn photoshoot?
Just your baby and your family. Everything else is provided. That said, if you have specific outfits or props that are meaningful to your family, you’re absolutely welcome to bring them. My post on what to wear for a newborn photoshoot has outfit guidance for the whole family if you’d like some direction before your session.
How far in advance should I book my newborn photography session?
During your second trimester is ideal. Most of my newborn dates fill up months in advance, particularly in spring and fall. Booking early also lets us put your due date on the calendar in pencil so we can adjust the photoshoot date once your baby actually arrives.
Can I add family portraits to my newborn photoshoot?
Absolutely. The Full Newborn Photography Session includes immediate family members throughout the photoshoot. If you book the Mini Session and want to add family portraits, reach out and we can discuss the best option for your family.
