My recommendation is to book in the spring of junior year for a summer senior photoshoot. That gives you plenty of time to plan your outfits, choose your locations, and get your images back well before any yearbook or announcement deadlines.
As for the best season to shoot, summer is my top recommendation by a significant margin. The light is beautiful in late afternoon and early evening, the green spaces throughout Carmel and Indianapolis are lush and full of color, and a rain-out in summer is easy to recover from because the scenery stays consistent. What to Wear for Senior Pictures — My Honest Advice
Here’s the advice I give every single senior I work with, and I mean it seriously: do not wing it on your outfits. This is the number one thing that separates a great senior gallery from a mediocre one, and it’s entirely within your control.
Try Everything On Before Your Photoshoot
Before your session, try on every outfit you’re planning to bring and really look at yourself in the mirror. Do you love how it looks? Does your bra show through it? Is it a wrinkly fabric that’s going to bother you in the pictures? What you see in the mirror is essentially what you’re going to see in your portraits as far as clothing is concerned. So pay close attention ahead of time, because the day of your session is not the time to discover that something doesn’t work.
Bring Real Variety
A casual look, a dressy look, and something in between is the ideal starting point. Beyond that, stick to solid colors and simple textures rather than busy patterns and large logos, because both tend to draw attention away from your face in photos. Neutral tones, earth tones, and pastels photograph beautifully in natural light. And bring your accessories, because hats, jewelry, and scarves add personality and give us more to work with throughout the session.

If you play a sport, bring your uniform and equipment. If you play an instrument, bring it. If there’s something that represents who you are at this point in your life, bring it to your photoshoot. Those personal touches are what make senior portraits feel authentic rather than generic, and they’re some of my favorite moments to capture.

Natural settings like Coxhall Gardens and Flowing Well Park in Carmel offer soft, organic backdrops that work beautifully for a wide range of styles. Urban locations throughout downtown Carmel and Indianapolis add a more editorial, architectural feel. And locations with personal meaning, like your high school campus or a favorite local spot, add a layer of storytelling that makes your portraits uniquely yours.

What to Expect the Day of Your Senior Photoshoot
A lot of seniors come into their photoshoot nervous, and that’s completely normal. What I want every senior to know is that you don’t need to know how to pose, you don’t need to be a model, and you don’t need to feel comfortable in front of a camera when you arrive. That’s my job, and after 25 years of doing this, I’m very good at it.
Throughout your session, I’ll guide you through poses that feel natural rather than forced. I’ll help you with your expressions. And I’ll make sure the whole experience feels easy and fun, even if you walked in feeling nervous. By the end of the session, most of my seniors don’t want to leave.
About two weeks after your photoshoot, you’ll receive a link to your proof gallery where you can browse and select your favorites. From there, every chosen image goes through careful retouching before being delivered to your final gallery with full reprint rights.
